The famous Rio Summit took place in 1992. That same year, on the shores of Geneva Lake, Thomas EGLI organised the very first participatory science programme. The NGO Objectif Sciences International was granted special consultative status with ECOSOC in 2011, and has continued to grow by being present on every continent and supporting citizens in creating their own solutions.

Anyone can become a scientific volunteer, regardless of their knowledge or skills. A unbelievable way to empower individuals to take responsibility for the sustainable development of our planet is through science education, scientific reasoning and (re)connecting with Nature. The rise of extremism, and the inadequacy of society's response to current environmental challenges, demonstrate the importance of helping today's and tomorrow's citizens acquire the critical mindset that is gained through the practice of science. But just also place particular emphasis on taking responsibility and developing autonomy, in order to enable citizens, whether young or adult, to be the actors and leaders of the change they want to see accomplished.

Participatory Science has the capacity to facilitate and strengthen government policies in favour of sustainable development goals. Indeed, the research project that is decided to identify the details of a problem to be solved is carried out with the citizens concerned. This bottom-up approach of community based involvement can be applied in all topics (biodiversity, food, conditions for women and children, renewable energies, and many others). In fact, by the time a government policy is set, the citizens are, on the one hand, already committed to the decision, because they are its co-authors, and on the other hand, they have acquired a greater understanding of the issue. This makes it doubly easy to implement the policy. What's more, it is supported over time by the generations and provide a long-term impact.

However, the benefits of Participatory Science go much further (Accountability, Social Inclusion, Adaptability…). They can be implemented in many different ways, and their educational and scientific power can make a major contribution to Sustainable Development and Peace in the World.

All UN agencies and programmes may be directly concerned. From UNESCO to UNDP, via UN Women, UNICEF, Desert, Habitat, UNHCR and all the other organisations, not forgetting the UN's internal services, absolutely every type of objective can benefit greatly from Participatory Science to achieve their goals more effectively.

April - Annual International Conference at United Nations : Peer-to-Peer NGOs for SDGs

Developing NGO Activities and Best Practices in Program Management

Every year in April, at the Palais des Nations, Geneva.

This five-day conference, aimed at NGOs in the process of creation or development, will present and model the operations of various types of mandates co-existing within an NGO. Attending NGOs will strengthen each other in their expertise and successful solutions.

The conference will feature a series of presentations, workshops, and meetings covering the wide range of possibilities in NGO creation projects (including an introduction to the concept via a ‘Serious game' at the beginning of the conference). Building on the unique example and the rapid, successful development of the NGO Objectif Sciences International (OSI), seminar participants will gain comprehensive knowledge and expertise in the functioning of an NGO and in managing specific program mandates (e.g., pedagogical, logistical, technical, developmental) within an NGO. This conference also provides training on various tools (both technological and pedagogical) specifically developed and/or optimized by OSI, available to other NGOs during this event. These tools help effectively and fully carry out a Program Manager mandate within an NGO or collectively manage the local group of an international NGO.

Additionally, this event will offer OSI's personalized support to individuals and organizations planning to establish an NGO, as well as to NGOs wishing to expand their activities in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Finally, individuals or NGOs interested in developing a partnership with OSI will find at this conference the resources necessary to establish and grow such partnerships.

At the end of these five days, benefiting from and enriched by the unique experience and expertise of OSI, participants will be capable and independent in ensuring fundamental NGO organizational principles within their own projects, both operationally, institutionally, locally, and internationally, knowing where to find the necessary methodological resources.

First organized in 2005 by Objectif Sciences International, and held several times a year ever since, it combines project-based learning, experiential learning, design, participatory research and a business model to ensure that projects remain viable over the long term.

Participants learn how to mobilize audiences, build protocols, produce data, document impacts and organize the governance of their project.

The 3-day version provides the methodological, educational and operational fundamentals; the 5-day version also enables participants to leave with a complete project ready to operate.

It is designed for NGOs, local authorities, schools, universities, laboratories, parks, reserves, leisure centres, impact-driven companies and project leaders wishing to create sustainable initiatives in support of the SDGs.

Participatory Science and Participatory Research at the heart of the NGO's actions

Participatory Science and Participatory Research have played a foundational role in the history and activities of the NGO Objectif Sciences International. The first participatory research initiatives imagined and created in 1992 immediately enabled children, teenagers, adults, families, teachers, volunteers and field practitioners to contribute directly to real scientific projects, in contexts of learning, exploration, cooperation and collective benefit.

This choice was never about adding a scientific activity to a programme, nor about turning a journey into a simple tool for science communication. From the outset, the aim was to make the lived experience of the adventure itself — both individual and collective — a driver of experiential learning, capacity building and knowledge production. Since 2005, the scientific programmes, scientific journeys, research camps, field missions, training courses, expeditions, discovery classes and international programmes developed by the NGO have all integrated the principles of Participatory Science and Participatory Research across all their formats.

This approach makes it possible to connect lived experience, observation, the scientific method, cooperation, responsibility and long-term commitment. Participants are not simply placed in front of already established knowledge: they learn to formulate a question, observe an environment, contribute to a protocol, collect data, understand the usefulness of their actions, cooperate with others, present what has been produced and take part in research that goes beyond their own individual journey.

The creation of training that continuously remains at the cutting edge

In 2005, this accumulated experience therefore led to the first structured training course in Participatory Science and Participatory Research, offered by the NGO Objectif Sciences International, based on work in science education carried out by Thomas EGLI and André GIORDAN within the Laboratory of Science Education and Epistemology — LDES — at the University of Geneva. Today, this training remains one of the oldest and, to this day, one of the most comprehensive and practical programmes in the field of Participatory Science and Participatory Research.

Delivered several times a year around the world, and every year in March in Paris, it is available in a short 3-day version, designed to provide the methodological, educational and operational fundamentals — Research and Facilitation-Teaching version — and in an intensive 5-day version, delivered as action training and a hackathon, enabling participants to design a complete project, including its business model — Research, Facilitation-Teaching and Design version.

Particular attention is given to Participatory Science and Participatory Research for Impact. The aim is not merely to understand the principles of scientific participation, but to train people who are capable of mobilizing audiences, designing useful protocols, producing data, documenting the effects achieved and leaving with a project ready to operate. This requirement includes the search for sustainable business models, so that projects can endure, create activities, strengthen teams and generate jobs within host organizations such as national parks, nature reserves, leisure centres, local authorities, schools, universities, NGOs, popular education associations, third places, science centres, responsible tourism organizations or local development programmes.

Because of the success of this training and the need to make it accessible to a greater number of stakeholders, the NGO Objectif Sciences International was led to contribute to the creation and development of a dedicated training organization: Step and Go. This international organization, present on every continent and operating in partnership with the NGO Objectif Sciences International and the entire UN ecosystem, now makes it possible to transmit, professionalize and deploy these methods among organizations, territories, institutions, companies, local authorities and project leaders seeking to transform their scientific, educational, social or environmental challenges into concrete action.
